United States welcomes foreign students and exchange visitors under following non immigrant visas:
Student Visa : F, M
The first step to get student visa F or M, requires you to get accepted by a Student & Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) approved College
Once you are accepted by the US school/college you plan to attend, you will be enrolled in Student & Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
The US school/college will provide you with Form I-20 to be presented to consular officer when you attend your visa interview, which is mandatory. Once you have the Form I-20, you need to complete online Non-immigrant Visa Form, DS-160 and upload the same with your photo.
The next step is to schedule visa interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate and attend the interview with the desired documents. The counsellor officer, during the interview will determine if you are qualified to receive a visa, and will stamp your visa with a F or M visa as the case may be.
Students with F-1 visa can work on campus for 20 hours per week during the academic session and 40 hours per week during the holidays.
After completion of their studies, the students can stay and work in US under Optional Practical Training (OPT) program for upto one year. Students with STEM designated degrees may apply for 17 months extension.
This visa is also available for teachers, professors, for summer work travel or other exchanges under approved programs.
Exchange Visitor Visa: J
Students studying in their own country, have an opportunity to study in a US College that will fulfil the education objectives of the students degree program in their own country through Exchange Visitor visa
Visitor Visa : B
Students enrolled for short recreational or non credit courses or for visiting a college, only Visitor visa is required.
